Oyster
River, Black Creek, Vancouver Island
|
The Oyster River
is a small stream that flows northeast from Pearl Lake (near Buttle
Lake) and crosses Highway 19 halfway between Courtenay and Campbell
River on central Vancouver Island, approximately 20km from each town.
The fishable length of the Oyster River is 15km. Access by car
to the lower 9km of the Oyster River is via Highway 19 and the associated
side roads (Glenmore Road, Saratoga Road, and McCaulay Road).
The Upper portions of the Oyster River are reached via the York
and Iron River roads from Oyster Bay, or the Duncan Bay logging
mainline from Courtenay.
The Oyster River
is mainly noted for its very good sea-run cutthroat fishery in the
estuary and lower reaches of the river. Winter steelhead and salmon
in the spring and fall attract anglers, with pink salmon found along
the beach during August.
Anglers are
advised to consult tidal water fishing regulations prior to fishing
in tidal waters.
